Surge in fake social media accounts impersonating the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF)

Background

Following the commencement of the 2025 enlistment and recruitment exercise by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) on October 1, 2025, the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has since observed a surge in fake social media accounts impersonating GAF, its officers and high command. Eighty-six (86) accounts have been identified in the past week. Analysis of the activities of the accounts indicates that they are engaged in recruitment fraud.

The CSA is engaging the respective social media platforms to conduct a takedown of the identified profiles while further investigations are being carried out.

Modus Operandi

  • Fraudsters create fake social media profiles using logos or images of legitimate security personnel.
  • Legitimate-looking recruitment advertisements are posted by fake profiles to lure potential victims.
  • Job seekers who express interest in the advertisement are required to make payments for items including application forms, medical exams, background checks, uniforms, and training materials.
  • In some cases, victims receive fake selection notices and are asked to submit scanned copies of their IDs, which are later used for identity theft.
  • Victims are often instructed to report to training or induction locations, only to discover the recruitment was a scam.

Recommendation

  • Disregard any messages or posts advertising protocol recruitment into security services.
  • Verify recruitment advertisements through official government websites or contact the agency directly.
  • Only rely on trusted official institutional websites for recruitment information. GAF’s recruitment portal for instance is https://apply.mil.gh/.
  • Avoid clicking on suspicious links in unsolicited messages or posts.
  • Do not pay for a job, genuine employers do not charge any fees for applications, tests, or training; any payment request is a clear sign of fraud.
  • Avoid sharing IDs, passports, or certificates with unverified recruiters to prevent identity theft or fraud.
  • Be cautious of job offers promising instant employment, high salaries, or guaranteed placement after payment.
  • Report any impersonating profiles or websites to the CSA for immediate action.
