Fake Parcel Delivery and Clearance Scam Involving Phishing Links

Background

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has observed a surge in fraudulent parcel delivery and clearance scams, particularly during this festive season, as the volume of online shopping and courier deliveries increases. The general public is advised to be cautious of unsolicited parcel delivery or clearance messages and to verify their authenticity.

Modus Operandi

  • Fraudsters impersonate courier service providers, delivery companies, or logistics providers, especially Ghana Post Company Limited.
  • Victims are sent text messages indicating that a parcel cannot be delivered due to address issues or that a shipment is awaiting clearance and requires immediate payment.
  • The messages contain malicious links that redirect victims to fake websites resembling legitimate courier platforms.
  • Victims are prompted to “update delivery details,” “confirm address,” or “complete payment,” leading to the harvesting of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) such as names, phone numbers, addresses, and payment details.
  • Fraudsters create urgency by warning that the parcel may be returned or discarded, or that delivery and clearance charges will increase if payment is delayed.

Recommendation

  • Treat unsolicited parcel delivery or clearance messages with caution, especially those containing links.
  • Avoid making payments for parcels you are not expecting or did not personally order.
  • Verify delivery claims directly with the courier company using official websites or contact numbers, not links provided in messages.
  • Be alert to urgency tactics, including threats of increased charges or cancellation of delivery.
  • Never disclose personal, banking, or mobile money details on unfamiliar or unverified websites.
  • Report suspected scam messages, links, or calls immediately to the appropriate authorities
